On Sunday I picked up Mr. Smarty pants, Derrick Bradley (who I might add has a ridiculously cool mustache for his gravatar!)… whom I might add is one smart dude. We got into our usual conversation. Trading back and forth our ideas on cool technology that is here or needs to be here. Regardless. I had the winner of the day. I’ve been online since 1996 helping with Toonaday.com. Acutally to be correct, it was Toon-a-day.com back then.

Dial up modem! Ya man. I was online when the modem was there. I used to get on later at night to chat and do stuff…. and man that famous modem sound always found a way to wake someone up in the house. I’ll never forget that noise. My kids will never know that sound. NEVER.

Looking back on it, we used to send out our email list through our ISP using :bcc. Unbelievable thinking about it now! Hundreds of emails sent by pushing the send button on a dial up modem. Interesting times.

Netscape was also it. I used to drool at the web editor tool built right into the browser. I could look(steal) the html from sites I liked and manipulate the code that way. RIGHT in the browser. Genius. Maybe not. Netscape didn’t last past Yahoo!

http://search.twitter.com/search?q=dennys

You can see the twittersphere was lit up today for people who went to Denny’s knowing they would get a free Grand Slam meal. The things people will do for a free $10! I wonder how many people skipped out on work to go fight the lines. I can only imagine. Someday I’m going to write a post on the things we do for free money even if it’s under $5.

This is why I like Twitter.

About 15 minutes ago there was a 5.8 earthquake that pounded LA area. From the news it is not reporting any injuries or deaths. This is still fresh as can be. Here is where it gets cool for me. Earthquakes are not cool… but letting people know about it via twitter is cool.

I get a text on my phone from Twitter. It’s from Jason Moffatt. Jason is a respected Internet Marketer. He says, “Wow, just had a earthquake, or some crazy thing shake my house. Thought it was my dog at first shaking my bed.”

2 minutes later I get this from him, “Apparently I wasn’t high, earthquake was real… http://tinyurl.com/67sjuo Other twitters felt it.”

Not even one minute after it actually happened… people were tweeting it. That’s real time. Here are some screen shots of people right after it happened and the second one is about 2 minutes later. The numbers kept of growing.

562 people had already sent tweets about it before this one above was taken.

770 more!

I’m quitting at this one.. but this is 3 minutes later….

News can travel really fast.

UPDATE******* 30 minutes later just for the heck of it…. 4565 and counting all talking about the earthquake!

<img class="alignnone size-medium wp-image-32" title="picture-6" src="http://www.jayleishman.com/wp-content/uploads/2008/07/picture-6-300x43.png" alt="picture 6 300x43 Earthquake in So.

This drives my wife nuts. When I approach a parking lot, I always look for spots just like everyone else. However, I do something different. I go to the back of the parking lot. I will go to the end of where cars are at the end of the line.

Why?

1. I like to be different.

2. Exercise

3. #1 reason… a quicker getaway.

How many times do you get stuck in parking lot traffic because you are waiting for people to move? While everyone else is paniking to get out and fight traffic, I am able to see my next move with more ease and be more calculated. I can see the problem areas and move around them. I can also look for better exits that others are too busy to not worry about.

This also goes for the getting on the train theory.

I take the train to and from work. I hate it but I love that I am saving gas and doing some good to the environment. Who else doesnt like to stand around smelly, greasy people on the train?

Coming home one day I saw something that taught me more about people. 40% of the people looking to get on the train from the platform got onto the last possible train. They had to squeeze on while they looked frantic that they wouldn’t get on… if they had really looked, all they had to do was walk up 30 steps to see that the cars ahead we more than welcoming with room…

It’s all about being calculated. Relate this to business.

Moral to the story…

Be different. Don’t do what everyone else does in business. Most people are not successful. So if most aren’t, then don’t follow them.
